Citing Your Data

In addition to publishing data, you will want others to cite your data if they re-use it. Data citation standards are still an emerging area, but there are some guidelines for data citation. You may also cite data within the major citation styles (e.g., MLA, APA, etc). Unless you have a specific disciplinary model, a data citation should include the following elements:

  • Author or Responsible Party (The study's PI, government agency, etc)
  • Year of Publication (Year the dataset was published or disseminated)
  • Title (Complete title of the dataset, including edition or version number if applicable)
  • Publisher or Distributor (Organizational entity that has archived or published the dataset)
  • URL, DOI, or other access location
